Gab is going to be six months old this month. At this age, many pediatricians recommend to start introducing solid foods to babies. How do we know that a baby is ready for solid foods?
Mayo Clinic offered a simple guide to assess if your baby is ready for solid food.
- Can your baby hold his or her head in a steady, upright position?
- Can your baby sit with support?
- Is your baby interested in what you’re eating?
The Baby Center recommends to watch for these signs as well.
- The baby can keep solid food in his mouth and then swallow it.
- The baby can swallow efficiently with less drooling (except when the baby is teething)
- The baby has doubled their birth weight (or weigh about 15 pounds) and are at least 4 months old.
- The baby seems hungry – even with eight to ten feedings of breast milk or formula a day.
We believe that Gab is ready for solid foods. We are excited to reach this milestone. Gab can now hold his body upright as long as the back is supported. He can support his sides already. But he is really having a hard time supporting his big belly.
He shows interest in the food that we are eating. He would stare at us while we chew on something and try to mimic the way we move our lips.
Our pedia gave us the go signal too. She even provided us some guidelines on what food to start with. I’ll share this in the next blog.
I’m also checking out some recipes for homemade baby food. Try finding them at Amazon.com.
