During Gab’s second week at home, we were quite worried about Gab crying too often. At first he was ok and every calm, but suddenly, he had burst of strong cries despite being fed. And these were usually at night when we are tired and would love to get a goodnight rest. Unfortunately, Gab wakes us up with his cry almost every hour. It is a sign of colic. We got worried and went to our pedia at St. Luke’s BGC for a check up.
The check up went well and our pedia says that Gab is perfectly fine. It’s not colic. She suggest we continue to comfort Gab and provide him the security he needs. She also suggested we read the book the Happiest Baby on the Block.
I didn’t find the book. I found the DVD instead. The author is Dr. Harvey Karp who is a renowned pediatrician. In his DVD, the Happiest Baby on the Block claims that the tecniques can calm the baby in just a few minutes and can extend sleeping time of the baby by 1-2 hours more.
By all measures, this DVD was a lifesaver. After watching the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, we immediately put it into action and the results are instant. It works.
He suggests 5 ways to calm a baby when he cries.
- Swaddle – my favorite technique
- Side or Stomach
- Shhhh… – doesn’t work for Gab
- Swinging
- Sucking
He calls them the soothing reflex. You can use one technique or all of them at one time depending on what will work with the baby.
The DVD was simple and straightforward. The introduction was quite long but it did explain the techniques. After that, Dr. Kamp wasted no time in showing the five techniques. Each technique was shown with a crying baby and you can instantly see the effects. While watching the DVD, I can’t wait to try it myself on Gab.
I really recommend you watch the DVD. Unlike reading the book, watching the DVD was faster. I would have probably finish reading the book in 3-5 days. But with the DVD, you’re done in less than a hour.

Didn’t read the book but we praticed two of the five methods mentioned. Swaddling also worked with Maia. The other one was “ssshhhhh…” while gently rubbing her chest. 🙂
Swaddling and swaying worked best for Gab. Ang bilis ng effect lalo na when we travel or in public places. 😀 The “sssshhhh…” makes Gab cry harder. Ayaw niya ang boses ko.
