Star Wars for Dads! When I saw the comic book Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown, I knew I can relate. It’s a short comic compilation of the “bonding time” between Darth Vader and the young Luke Skywalker. With the cute artwork and funny quips, the book surely tickles.
Darth Vader and Son comic book takes us to the galaxy far, far away, where Darth Vader faithfully carries on his daddy duties. And of course, the young Luke is not going to make it easy for the Dark Lord of the Sith.
The comic book is not a graphic novel with a story from beginning to end. Each page is a story in itself. Just like a newspaper or magazine comic. It short but sweet. The jokes aren’t new. Some of them are common scenes between father and sons. Yet, Jeffrey Brown takes these jokes to a different setting that makes them funny.
Kids in a toy store is common sight. But it becomes hilarious when it is Luke and Darth Vader debating over a Jar Jar Binks action figure in a toy store.
Jeffrey Brown also illustrates the perennial question from kids like “Are we there yet?”and ” Can we keep him?”. It never fails to make me smile.
There are also those cheezy father and son moments where Luke shows his thoughtfulness by giving Darth Vader a gift. What else, but a necktie!
Most of the time, you would see Darth Vader turn into a humbled baby sitter. Despite the lack of emotion on his face, er… mask, you’d see his shoulders stoop down in surrender to the young Jedi. Even super villians fall hopelessly defeated to their sons. Just imagine what is it like to an ordinary dad like me.
There are more of these funny comics in Darth Vader and Son comic book. It’s just 64 pages. You can read it in one sitting. Or even while standing.
I wish it was longer.
